At the Dudley pit enquiry Reynolds, a miner, stated that the pit had been very hot and gaseous. There had teen frequent outbursts of flames for a fortnight before the disaster. There had beou a - serious outbreak on the parts brattioed up several times. He called the attention of the overmen to the increasing presence of gas. The evidence of the majority of the witnesses showed that miners and experts considered 'the colliery safe and well ventilate! There were occasional small outbursts of gas, but nothing serious.
