At the Dudley pit enquiry Rcj nokls, a miner, stated that the pit had been very i hot and gaseous. There had been f>'e- ' quent outbuists of flames f or a f oi tnight i before the disastei. There had been a serious outbreak on the pait& bratticed i up several times. Ho called the attention 1 of the overmen to the increasing piesenco of gas. The evidence of the majority of the witnesses showed that mineis and experts considered the colliery safe and well ventilated. There woie occasional small outbursts of gns, but nothing serious.
