BOWLING.

Fellding v. Wanganui.

Lovely weather prevailed to day (Wednesday) for the return match between Feilding and Wanganui played on the latter's green. The visitors were met at the station on arrival by the officers and members of the W.8.C., aud after the usual hearty greetings, were escorted to the green, where a "roll up" was indulged in. After tho Feildin" team were entertained at luncheon at Chavannes', and the " inner man " having been fully appeased, a start was made with the match in 25 heads, at about one o'clock. The names of the players are appended as follow :—: — Feildino. Wasgandi. No. 1 Rink. Curtis May Bailey Benefield Thomson Puinell Bray (skip) Rodwell (sk) No. 2 Rink. Haybitttle Thomson Dickson Spurdle Scott Armstrong Young (sk) McFarlane A. (sk) No. 3 Rink. Johnston Dickson Goodbehero Elliott Sandilands Moult Saywell (sk) Bennie (sk) The green was very keen, and played well, in fact it could not well have been in better condition, considering the season of tho year. There could be no doubt that Feilding had sent three strong rinks to compete against Wanganui, the visitors being evidently bent on victory, and from the outset they asserted a slight superiority. With nine heads finished, the scores were Feilding 23, Wanganui 22. At the rinks the scores were — No. 1, Feilding 10 to 4; No. 2, 12 to 5; No. 3, 1 to 13. Later on, the boards showing the aggrogates read — Fending 23. Wanganui 34, the scores being— No. 1, Feilding 10, Wanganui 6 ; No. 2, 12 to 10 ; No. 3, Ito 18. When 15 heads had been recorded the scores were — Feilding 32, Wanganui 48. At No. 1 Rink the scores were — Feilding, 10 to 13 ; No. 2, 19 to 12 ; No. 3, 3 to 23. It will thus be seen that, so far, Bennies rink is answerable for tho lead of Wanganui by 16 points. The latest scoring at the hour of going to press was — Feilding S3, Wanganui SG. The scores at the rinks were— No. 1, Feilding, 10 to 17 ; No. 2, 19 to 15 ; No. 3, 4to 24.

At a meeting of the officers of the Chiistchurch Garrison Volunteer Corps held recently, it was resolved that a military band should be established to take place of the Garrison Band, whose services have been dispensed with. Judgment has been given by Mr H. W. Northcroft, S.M., in favor of defendant in the case of W. Pinches (Mr Treadwell ) v. John Coburn (Mr Marshall), olaim £3B lss, for commission on an arranged sale of land in Viotoria Avenue on 2nd February, 1898, for £1300. A sitting of the Assessment Court for the Borough of Wanganui was held this morning, Mr C. C. Kettle, Judge, presiding. Only three objections to the valuations wore received, but no one appeared iv support. The name of Mrs Morrison was struck out in connection with sections in London Street, and the names of the owners (four of her family) substituted. By consent the valuation of a section facing Alexander Street, the property of Mr H. C. Field, was reduced from £14 to £6 per annum. Negotiations for the acquirement of the Waikakahi Estate, of 48,000 acres, on the Canterbury side of the Waitaki, Rre, (says the Dunedin Star) still incomplete. The probabilities ore that as there is a big difference between the Government valuation and that of .the agents for the owner, (Mr Allan M'Lean) overtures will "be made to have the matter settled by private arbitration, hi order to save the property from being seized compulsory and the intervention of the Compensation Court.
