OUR RAILWAYS.

A Surplus of £90,000.

(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 28. The Railway Department estimate a surplus of £00,000. The sum of £162,000 •was added to the capital account, in addition to £200,000 voted, and 37 miles of new lines were opened, representing another £270,000 of capital. The expenditure on maintenance is the largest on record, and exceeds the vote of Parliament, so that a considerable Bum will have to be charged to " unauthorised." A large amount of rolling stock was turned out during the year, but the in-, crease in traffic is so great that the cry for more still continues.
