NEW ZEALAND RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
rlattoring Criticism.
A recent number of the Financial News contains a most flattering article on New Zealand railway management, based on the details disclosed in last year's Financial Statement. Referring to tho salo of old rolling stock to the west Australion Government for £12,000, our English contemporary says : — •" With this sum and £9019 more charged to the woiking expenditiue Nevr Zealand has equipped herself with 131 new waggons of varied and improved patterns with twice the carrying capacity of old. . . . The double-decked sheep waggons to carry 120 five sheep would cause some sensation m this coantiy. It is a good feign that the extra coat of the waggons built to replace those sold was defrayed out of levenue and not out of capital, and tho moderation of the expenditure of capital in recent yeirs deserves lecognition. Last year only £G4,717 was expended on capital account, and apparently not a penny of tho cont of putting lit additional sleepers or of replaceing iron with steel lails has been debited to capital. This eound practice affords reason for believing that so soon as the exceptional renewals indicated bj theMinibter of Railways are completed the New Zealand railways will steadily progress as remunerative undertakings.
