NEW ZEALAND RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
Flattering Criticism.
A recent number of the Financial News contains a most flattering artiole 011 Now Zealand lailway management, based on the details disclosed in last year's Financial Statement. Refeiriug to the salo of old rolling stock to the west Australion Government for £12,000, our English contemporary says :—": — " With tins sum and £9019 more chaiged to tho working expenditure New Zealand has equipped herself with 151 new waggons of varied and improved patterns with twice the carrying capacity of old. . . . The double-decked sheep waggons to carry 120 five sheep would cause some sensation 111 this country. It is a good sign that the extra cost of tho waggons built to replace those sold was defrayed out of revenue apd not out of capital, and the modeiation of the expenditure of capital in recent years deserves recognition. Last veer only £64,717 was expanded on capital account, and apparently not a penny of tho cost of putting in additional sleepers or of replacemg iron with steel tails has been debited to capital. This sound piactice affords reason for believing that so soon as the exceptional renewals indicated by the Minister of Railways are completed the New Zealand railways will steadily progress as remunerative undertakings.
