BOWLING.

Hotesby "Jack."

The -teca! green looks bright and plays ! well at the present time, due to last week's welcome rain and the attention bestowed on it by the lately-appointed caretaker, Mr J. May. The growth of grass is vigorous, notwithstanding havoc played by the worms, but in some places there are unsightly-looking patches which will need a lot of nursing. Next year the tnacrooarpa hedge is to be removed, as it gradually dying off, and it will be replaced by ornamental trees, shrubs, etc., similar to the bed near the other boundary fence. Thiß is a move in the right direction fox the hedge isbecomingsomowhat unsightly, and certainly will not improve in appearance. In the- thM drawing for the senior bowls, Messrs Rodwell and Poster met yesterday afternoon, the former proving victorious after a well fought game throughout by 20 to 17. In the second round for the junior bowla Messrs Spnggens and Carson met on Tuesday afternoon, when the former won by 20 to 18. • The semi-final for Messrs Thomson and Lewis' pairs trophies resulted as follows:— Messrs Wright and Milne 23, Messrs Notman and Keesing 21. The winners therefore play off with Messrs Dickson and Spurdle in the final for possession of the trophies. Yesterday Mr Eodwell received a communication from Mr Hugh L. Sherwill, secretary of the FeUding Bowling Club, asking if the local olub can receive a team from peilding on Wednesday next, the 80th. It is not thought possible to obtain & sufficient number on the Thursday as thjj members are engaged in business and could not' get away. The proposal will be brought before the executive of thg local club, and their is every probability tljat the visit con be arranged, although the Wednesday does not fit in well with our - Thursday half-holiday. , To-day was beautifully fine for the match. Wanganui y. Waverley. Which took place on the local green in the presence of a number of spectators, in eluding tl}£ fair pes. The vis>tor3 having jjoen met and welgomea at the railway station by several of the officers and members of tho W.B,C, were escortec} to tile green, after which they were entertained at luncheon at Ghayanneß, Previous 'to commencing play, Dr Hatherley (Vice-President), in the absence of the President (Mrf . M. Spurflle), in a happily-worded speeoh heartily welcomed the Waverley .players to Wanganui. The visitors, it was known, were somewhat heavily handicapped by being ayoung plub, and they were also playing on a strange green, so that if victory rested with them it would redound all the more to their credit. It was hoped that this the first match with Waverley would be but the precursor of others, and at least if not a series of matches, that an annual fixture wonld be arranged where visits could be interchanged. The remarks were ) received with applause, and the game in 21 heads, was then proceeded with. Afternoon tea and dainty refreshments were dispensed by Mesdames W. Eodnnll, J, Notman, 3. H. Burnett, and _iss Pawson, and were thoroughly appreciated - by players and visitors alike. The game started at about 1 p.m., the teams being as follows :—: — WABBLES. WANOANOI. No. 1 Bink. D.
