LUNACY REFORMS.
Deputation from the Medical Congress to the Premier.
(Per United Press Association.) ■Welunoton, March 18. \ A paper was read at the Medical Congreßs by Dr Collins on lunacy reforms. He recommended tho separation of curable from incurable patients, and an obbervation ward in hospitals where an examination could be conducted, instead of at the police stations. It was resolved to urge these reforms on the Government and a deputation waited on the Premier at once. The Hon. Mr Soddon agreed in the main with the suggestions, but said it was a question of money, though it would be well spent. He blamed the doctors for the loose way in which they sent people to asylums. Many were only suffering from old age, and their relatives did not want to keep them. A good many cases were those of undesirable immigrants brought in when the public works policy was vigorous.
