Wellington, March 17. Tho sum paid by the Union Company in London for tho cargo steamer Ella, since renamed the ICiuna, was about £12,500. At tho Medical Congress a letter was read from Dr Hacon, of Christchuich, desii ing the council to expross an opinion as to the necessity of inspecting meat for expoit and milk. It was resolved that the council should consider, and if necessary move in, the matter. Dr Mackie thought the colony should ha\o a State bncteuologtet. A heavy gale blew laat night, followed by rain, but this . morning is a bright and perfect day for tho holiday. It is Blightly windy. The principal celebrations are the Hibernian sports on the Basin Reserve and picnics. Mr John Duthie, M.H.R., leaves for London via 'Frisco to-day. At a meeting of his suppoitors last night he said he expected tho Government would run the full term ofythepresept Parliament before a dissolution took^/lace. Personally, he would never support a Government of stagnation. In regard to social and labour legislation they had a lot of leeway yet to make up. He claimed, however, that the Conservative party should really bo known as the Constitutional party. It was decided to form an organisation to keep together tho workers on Mr Duthie's side.
