Opening of the Meeting.

The meeting opened at 10 o'clock with tho 200 yds range of the Nelson Match, 7 shots kneeling, not counting for the Belt. The weather is fine, with a puffy rear wind, and the light is good. Ammunition of Auckland manafactuie of December, 1897, is being used, and at this range with very little complaint, though here and there a bad cartridge is met with ; bat a better test will be at the longer range. The marking is rather slow but not unexpected, as the men are unaccustomed to the work. At 11.15 the range was finished, tho leading scores being— Wmslade (Thames), McDiarmid (Oamaru), G. Fiaser (Kaitangata), Kruse (Wanganui), Rutherford (Kaitangata), Bariaclough (Oamaru), 22 ; Hastie (Oamaru), Love (Wellington), Hading (Blenheim), Eveiy (Oamaru), 21 ; Little (Ngapara), Domegan (Gore), A. Balliuger Wellington), Jack (Dunedin), William Geary (Peninsula), Thawley fWellington), O'Neill (Wanganui), Irvine (Waimea), Jones (Oamaru), Wakelyn (Christchurch), Beadle (Dunedin), 20. Barraclough's score included an outer. There is every appearance of the wind freshening. At 500 yds the wind increased considerably. The shooting is not up to anticipation, but some got on fair scores, the highest being— Hastie, Winslade, Boyce, Rule, 33 each. At the conclusion of this range the leading scorers were Winslado C 5, Hastie 64, B. Love G2, T. Eraser, H. Boyce (Invercargill), McDiarmid (Oamaru), and A. Ballinger, 61. The other range will bo finished this afternoon.
