SERIOUS RIOTS IN BOMBAY.

Hindoos and Mohammedans Resisting

(Received March 11 at 10 a.m.) Calcutta, March 10. A serious outbreak has occurred at Bombay in connection with the suppression of the plague. A party of officials were attacked by natives while ascertain- '' v itig the c'ause'of the illness of a Mohammedan woman. - The party were dispersed, , The police interfered, but were stoned. They then fired on the mob, killing four of, the rioters and wounding several others. ■ > -i -The'exoitement spread like wildfire, the ' Hindoos 'joining the Mohammedans in resisting the authorities. Two ) privates 'of the Shropshire Regiment were killed while walking in the street, and the European officers of the police were severely handled. , Several were Beiiously wounded. A number of Europeans were beaten '" and stabbed in the bazaars, ambulances were burnt, and attempts made to set fire to the hospitals. The European nurses narrowly escaped ,/, jrith their lives. The snrgeon of the Jamsetjei Hospital was badly wounded. « ■■ - The rioters were repelled after several were killed. " ' - • The' outbreak is the most alarming that has occurred for many years. !
