THE BAND CONTEST.
« (Speoiol to Heb&ld.) Dunedht, October 23. The twelve competing bands played the Pnritani seleotion last night, 'l'he "Sew Zealand Bauds are undoubtedly improving, and at least half a dozen bands played remarkably well. Of courao a good deal will depend upon the playing of the Taunhausor seleoLion to-night, but the winning bands should be chosen from the Oatnaru Garrison, ■Wellington Garrison, Inrercargill Garrison, Stanmore, and Dnnedin Citizens, somewhat in that order. The weak spot in many of the bands was a tendency to overdo the double forte passages.
