Wanganui Herald. [PUBLISHED DAILY.] SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 1896. COMING EVENTS.

Altotjgh the next general election ia still at least six months distant the Conservatives are very busy trying to induce certain members of their party to once more enter the lists. Taking advantage of the gathering of people from all parts of the coast at the late race meeting here, some of the leaders of the party honoured Wanganui with a visit, and were very busy inculcating on the local | members of it the necessity for exertion and preparedness. It is understood they induced Mr R. 0. Bruce to give a reluctant consent to again contest the Jiangitikei seat, but ikaL they failed to shake Mr F. E. Jaekßou'fl decision not to contest the Wanganui eeal in the Conservative interests. Perßonully we have a great liking for Mr Bruce, as ia the case with all who know him, but even his personal popularity is insufficient to induce tne electors of Jiangitikei to vote for an avowed supporter of a party that has done sq mifch harm in tho past, ami is so erideptly anxious to resume its forme? course of political wrong doing. They have in s£r Stevens an equally popular ma» outside of politics, and one who has served them well in the past anil is certain to remaii). frue to his pledgeg in the future. It is therefere extremely unlikely that the Liberal electors of JRaugitikei will stultify themselves by voting for a Conservative, candidate no matter how much they may esteem him privately. It is not a question of men : is is one of measures, and the electors should be careful not. to confuse the two things when thej are called upon to record their votes at the ne^fc general election, which will no doubt be bitterly fought out by ths enemies o£ tlio people, who are getting raveaous for another big loan to scramble for to improve their vast landed postjeesious.
