It is a ourious faofe that the journalists of' Italy are the most bellicose ot all member* of society. It appears that during tho tea years ended in 1891 they fought more duels than the members of any other, profession. No fewer than 947 duels took plaoe in whioh .newspaper articles worothe caase of the dispute. In 780 cases rivalry for the hand of a lady was alleged as the reason for the encounter, political differences werewsponsible for 877, insulting words accounted for 289, and so forth. The least common specifio cause of dnelling was quarrelling over gambling transitions, 'which resulted in 19 duels. According to these figures, students would seem to be less quarrelsome than barristers, and actors. less quarrelsome than any who fought at all.
