OURSELVES

New Offices of the Wanganui Herald. We may be pardoned if we draw attento the fact that tha WAitGAiroi Hkbaxd CoxpAVr (Ltd.) have just entered into possession of new offioes on Taupo Quay, the necessity arising from the aooumulation ot business conneoted not alone with tbe daily issue of tha paper, but also with the weekly issue — Teh Yboman. To oaarry baok the mind to the date when the Hnßlxn was firat published in 1867, and when the Company was formed in 1883, and then to notice the progression of the paper in and around the district will sufficiently indicate the great strides taken. So much so, finding the aooommodation inadequate in the office the proprietary were compelled to interview an arohiteofc, Mr Theo Jacobsen being secured. Plans having been duly prepared, tenders were called and that of Mr Petheriok accepted- As the building is now finished, it has been highly commented on by those who have viewed it while passing along Taupo Quay. And certainly looked at from the front, the edifice presents a very pleasing and effeotive appe&ranoe. The design is in the Italian style. The frontage on Taupo Quay is 26 feet by a depth of 104 feet. The entrance hall is 7ft wide with a grand flight of steps leading to the upper floor. From the entrance, above the stairs, there is a stained glass window, with margin oolored lights. Entering from the main hall on the left hand side, access is gained to the public office, where all financial business, reoei ring "ads.," and so forth is arranged. Ihia portion of the building is very roomy and lof tr, - and moreover is up-to-date in modern requirements. Beyond this room is a spacious board room aud at the rear of this is one df the finest composing rooms to be found in New Zealand not only as regards dimensions, but also concerning light, warmth, and ventilation, while tha meohanioal staff have every faoility for turning out their work in the most careful manner. Off the composing room is what is known in the trade ai the "wetting" room, where thepapsr for the Bbk&xd and Yeoman is wet down. An open court Rives aeoesa to the machine room, in whioh will be found some of the most modern machinery of the day, worked bj one of the latest and most approved gas engines. Aocess may be gained te the upstairs portion of the building by the flight of stairs from the main entranoe or at the rear of the building. The former leads to the editor's room, a fine, spacious, lofty room, having a grand view of the river. Following on, a oorridor leads to the sub-editor's Toom, a nice, oosy little room, and off this again we come to the jobbing department. The same remarks may apply to this room as te the composing room regarding ventilation, light and warmth, in faofc the jobbing department is one of the snuggest in the whole building. Off this is the stationery department, a very spacious room where there is a place for everything and everything in its plaoe: We have already referred to tKo satißfaotion the architeot has given in carrying out his' work, and w e mnat now also pay Mr Petheriok the compliment for having carried j out as contractor the work to the entire satisfaction of the architect and all those concerned. As a matter of fact, the Wanganui Hh&iXD Offioes are the most substantial of the kindereoted on the coast between Auokloud and Wellington, aud it is to the general oredit chat the architectural designs have been oarried out to the letter, the result being that the building i« an ornament; to the town. ,'
