A Portsmouth correspondent states that the troopship Crocodile, which broke down on November 8, off Aden, will be brought to Portsmouth for repairs, the order for her return to Bombay having been cancelled. Private letters received at Portsmouth give a vivid description of the scene after the accident. It appears that at about ten I o'clock on the morning of the 3rd November a terrible explosion took place, and steam was seen to be rußbing from the engine- j room hatchway. The vessel was immediately stopped, and the bugle sounded for the troops to assemble. Orders were also given to close the watertight doors and to man all the boats. Above the noise rose the cries of the women and children, who had gathered on the poop, where many of the women fainted. On the engine-room being examined it was found that the highpressure cylinder cover and the cylinder were completely omashed, the cross he&dbolt having broken and driven the piston right through the cylinder. Hails were set, and distress guns wore fired, but the signals were not observed at Aden. At daybreak next d&y they were assisted by Her Majesty's ships Pigeon and Woodcock, and eventually anchored under the Rock of Aden, just over fourteen mileß from the spot where the breakdown occurred.
