(Per United Press Association,) WELLINGTON. January 11. Gunner Bezar, of the Permanent Artillery, was charged at the Police Court this morning with attempting to commit suicide by taking rat poison. The Magistrate said the case appeared to him to be one he should send to a jury, aB the act was not the outcome of drink. Counsel for the accused stated that the young man was perfectly satisfied with hiß position in the force, and suggested that his behaviour was due to sunstroke. The Magistrate reserved hi« decision till 4 o'clock this afternoon. Further developements are expected in connection with the case. The death of a married woman named Mary Ann Hollis, wifo of a letter carrier, residing at Buckle-street, was reported to the police to-day. She has been suffering from heart diseaee, and becoming low spirited on Monday she swallowed a number of matches. Yesterday shebeeamo very ill, and, on tho doctor being called in, she admitted having taken matches. Emetics were administered, but withont avail, and the woman died last night. Mr T. G. MacarDhy, Chairman of Directors of the Manawatu Railway Company, who has been for a trip to Great Britain and the Continent, returned by the Tarawera to-day. CHRISTCHUECHT. January 11. The Tax Department has instituted proceedings against a doctor in this city for failing to Bend in his income return, HAWERA. January 11. In the Bankruptcy Court Judge Kettle exercised summary powers and committed Edward Sach, farmer, on four charges of obtaining credit under falße pretences. Bail was allowed (accused £50), and two sureties £50 each. TIMARU. January 11 Mr E. T. Rhodes, fourth son of the lato Mr G. Rhodes, a pionacr settler of South Canterbury, died this morning from blood poisoning. He caught a cold wbilo acting as judge at the Caledonian Sports, which set up quinsey. The gathering was lane ed on Friday, and septicaemia supervened. His death, is much deplored.
