CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The usual quarterly mooting of the Chamber of Commerce was held at the office or the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agoncy's Company Limited, yesterday, (Tuesday) afternoon, when there were present— Messrs John Stevenson (choir), J. L. Stevenson, A. J. Parsons, E. N. Lifllton, T. B. Young, A. flatriok, R. H. J. lilley, P. D. Hogg, G. Carson, and W. H. Bamicoat.

The minutes of tLe last special meeting were read nnd confirmed.

The Secretary reporUd that Le had received a copy ot tho Bankruptcy Bill as passed last session, also, the Shop Hour's Bill, and the Truck Act, which are available for members of the Chamber.

A letter re the Vaile Testimonial was ordered to lie on the table.

Mr Bamicoat wrote to the Chamber enclosing a letter written to tho Hon. J, Bal' lance re tho Native Lands Office in Wan' £anui.

The Ohairmun reported that he had commuwoated with the Public Works Department in reference to tho unfinished road at Pipiriki. The roply was to tbe effect that the felling would be undertaken shortly, but the formation not yet for a few months. Mr Hatriok complained that the road was to have been finished last ■ummer, whereas it will not now bo finished this summer. The chairman said the telegram was vague and suggested that the Chamber write for some definite information.

Mr Hatrick said another matter arising out of this, and of far more importance than the wool traffic, was tbo tourist traffic, anil he believed that if this pare of the road wero completed hundreds of tourists would come down this way, but would not —and especially ladies — rough it as they aro at present obliged to do. Mr Liffiton moved that the matter be left in the chairman's hands to urge tbo Department to push on with the work as speedily as possible. Mr Carson thought the Chamber should express its regret at the altogether unnecessary delay of the Department.

On the suggestion of Mr Hatrick, Mr Lifti ton's motion was altered urging that tho road be finished " this summer as proraised." Seconded by Mr loung and carried.

Re Field's Track— Of the three men who had been employed on Field's Track, two had been discharged and the remaining one was under notice, bo that this all important work will shortly be unattended. — Mr' Stevenson said be wrote a private letter to tbo Hon. Mr Ballance on this matter but had not as yet roceived a reply.

An amount of correspondence between the Chamber and tho Government in reference to tho roads to the back countiy was road, and (on the motiou of Mr Carson it was decided to send a telogram to the Government urging the necessity for at once opening thoso roads, The meeting then adjourned.
