DEATH OF MR JAMES MOORE.

The news concerning the death of Mr James Moore, of Bushy Park, JCai Iwi Blook,,wlU be received with wide-spread regret thronghout this distriot, for he was a nuin known and respected by the many for Lis very estimablo qualities. Mr Moore, who was a. native of Lerwiok, Shetland Isles, came out to this colony early in 1863 with Mr Wm. Porteous, landing at Auckland. After about two months' residence in the North Mr Moore went to Canterbury and from there camo on to Wacganui, where he bought the general storekeoping business on Tanpo Quay from Mr Wm. Kells in conjunction with Mr Jamos Ourrio. He tbon undertook tbe contract to supply tho troops with grocorios and provisions during tbo troublous times with the Maoris. About tho year 1867 ho leased tho Kai Iwi Blork from tho nativrs, and soiling out bin interest in tho T aapo Quay business to John Lamoat, he went on to tho station, where he resided up to tho lime of his decease. Ho had many oxcitng adventures with the Maori* , and his house and outbuildings were burnt down by tho turbulent Titokowaru snd his party, while on another occasion he was attacked by tbe Maoris and chased across the paddocks, eventually eluding pursuit by «4capinto the bush, whero he stood for some time und returned the fire of the attacking natives. Mr Moore married a lister of the late Mr J. S. Thompson, of Nukumaru, and latterly of Auokland. He had been ailing for some time from an affection of the heart, and death ensued some time during last night, JXe leaves a widow and two sons to mourn Iheir los?, and his death, at ftout 60 years of age, will be sincerely regretted by tho v<ry many friends he had made during residence amongst us.

Mr and Mrs W. H. Levin, who have been absent from the colony for about eighteen months, returned to Wellington by the Doric.
