In the course of a speech to day, Mr Gladstone, in referring to the expulsion of the Jows from Russia, said nothing was to be gained by denouncing the revolting treatment to which they were subjected, and it would bo better to appoal to Europeans after preparing a digest o£ exceptional laws of Russit. In tho Houso of Commons, Mr W, H. Smith, First Lord of the Treasury, announced his intention of introducing a Bill suspending British sealers from carrying out their calling in the Behiing Sea for » term of one year. A compromise has been arrived afc betweon Mr Smith and the Newfoundland delegates respecting the modus vivendi, and tho Imperial bill will now be withdrawn if the measure being discussed by the Newfoundland Parliament is found to be as satisfactory as oxpected. The tailors who went out on strike have resumed work pending a settlement with tho mastora, who, it is said, are willing to make largo concessions to the men. Ten thousand East End and Jewish tailors strike on Sunday. The Miners' Conference sitting at Chester has invited the Australian and American miners to join an International Federation. The tenants at Old Tipperary who were evicted for not pnying their rent have accepted the terms of the landlords. They have now paid the arrears of rent duo, and have returned to their homes, Vienna, May 29. The Emperor of Austria entertains the delegates to the Postal Conference at a banquet on Saturday.

St. Johns, May 29. The French Admiral is enforcing the exclusive claims of the French fisherman to all fish in St. George's Bay, and his action is causing much excitement amongst English residents.
Nbw Yobk, May 29. Experiments have been made with Edison's latest invention, the Kinctograph, combining a phonograph with a photograph, and the results obtained have been marvellous.
