AN UNFOUNDED CHARGE.
The organs of the late Government h.ive i several times'stated that the present Colonial ; Treasurer (Mr Ballance) when he occupied. \ a similar position in the Grey Government j left a big deficit. The Premier, in speaking- j to the Address-in-Reply and Dr Newmans attack upon himself, touched on this matter, and denied that he had left any j deficit when ho went out of office as j Troasurer. The year that he held that office I in the Grey Cabinet there was no deficit ; except on the land revenue. That there j
should bo such a deficit is easily explained when it is remembered that ouo of the hon, gentleman's cardinal artioleß of political faith is that of substituting perpetual leasing for absolute parting with the Crown Lands of the colony. It would not be nn act of merit for any Treapurei- to go out ot office leaving v big surplus made up largely of the proceeds of such lauds aold in large i blocks to big runholdors.
