THE NEW MINISTRY.

Contemporary Opinion. (Wellington Post.) Mr Ballanee cannot be accused of having wasted any time in the selection of bis Ministry. Entrusted with the task of formation on Friday, on Saturday he was prepared with almost a full Cabinet to take tho oaths of office. His ta;k was greatly facilitated by the loyal support assured him from his Party, and the very generous mannor in which many of his followers, who From one consideration or another might fairly have nspired to office — as, for instance, Messrs Fith, Fisher, G. Hutchison, and Bees — waived all personal considerations, and left their leader a perfectly free hand. He haß thus been able to get-, together a team of at leaifc fair average ability, and { well representative of the territorjai divisions of the colony, as well as of its several leading interests and industries. As a whole, it compares by no means unfavourably with the team it has relieved. Mr Ballanee mar not perhaps bo as good a driver as his predecessor. He will ueo other means than those of the bullockpuncher to ensure progress, and although he may require an equally largo hat as Sir Harry Atkinson is wont to wear, thero can be no doubt that his boots will be found several sizes smaller and destitute of tho hobnails which havo now became historic, (Wellington Evening Press.) Wo think the Hon. Mr Ballanee may be congratulated upon his choine of colleagues. The composition of his Ministry is probably tho best that he could have contrived out of the materials he had to his hand. He evidently found no difficulty in getting a team together ; in fact, thera can be no doubt he had an embarrassing abundance of straw for the manufacture of Ministerial bricks. Of course, wo do not mean this in a chaffing sense. The difficulty would be not tho selection, but the rejection, of colleagues, and the consequent risk of alienating support when so many were on the same level of ability, and had tho same claim, for party services, for a seat in the now Ministry. Mr Ballanee has got over this difficulty very well, co all appearances, and has chosen m.en who havetberespeetofthemembers generally, and who, if they have never yet done anything to inspire the country with a belief in their capacity for administration, or eminence in Statecraft, have yet not done anything to alionato public confidence in tbeir political integrity, or to inspire doubt as to the safety of the colony's welfare in their hands.

Messrs Boss, Glover, and Smiley will run three brakes to the Turakina races tomorrow. For particulars bbo adverttiements. Mr James Bain, of Wanganui, is htw'mg for Australia this afternoon with a view of consulting the best oculists there in regard to his son's sight, A Press wire from New Plymouth states that they have sunk to a depth of 200 feefc ot tho petroleum worts, and come on a strong indication of oil. Tho sand taken out is impregnated. If Russia has its Alexander 111. we hare our Atkinson. The people of Now Zealand hare nover yat ruled, though they have been persuaded that they hare, and hare partly believed the lie. Perhaps tho last acts of Sir Harry Atkinson will arouse them to a sense of their real position, and ono of their first great act* will be to abolish the Council , and to insist upon an elective Governor, as ft means of placing the control of their own affairs more perfectly in their own hands, and of preventing fcho eorry and discreditable political draita that has been enacted by a defeated and angrj party, without any regard to the people's wishes. — Oainaru Mail. At the Sandhurst Police Court tho other day, the magistrates expressed their deter- ] urination to put a stop to the use of bad language by youths in the streets on Sunday evenings, and fined two youths for so offending £5 each. Some time ogo tho Ministers of the various denominations requested tho Council to put a stop to the practice, and j the police have been instructed to arrest every offender. Tbe police magistrate remarked that tho use of bad languago was »o frequent in the streets of large cities that the colonial youths did not know when they used disgusting word?, and polluted the ears o£ woman and children. It was a terrible stato o£ thingt, und it waa the duty of every Bench to inflict exemplary punishment-, and in future all offenders brought before him on Buch charges would be most severely dealt with. This should prove a hint to tome of our budding, Clustering, and bumptious krrikine,
