Marton Amateur Dramatic Society.

There was a bumper house at Marton on Friday night to witness the ever-popular opera "The Pirates of Penzance," The lowuess of tho stage floor and tho limited space on the stage for bo large a chorus tended to mar both musical and dramatic effect. Tho scenery in both aots reflects credit upon tho artistic taste and skill of Dr Skerman, who devoted himself to this task. The side winga in the first act lepresented juttine rocks which gave a rugged and piractical appearance to the sea const, and in tho second act, the reflection of the full moon on " the ancestral rains " was very effective The Society's efforts were warmly appreciated and encored by a most enthusiastic audience ; and the orchestra under the conduotorship of Mr W. J. Smith rondored valuablo assistance. Mr Martin's clarionet at times was strikingly pleasant, but sometimes rather too loud for tho soloists.

The leading parts were filled, upon the wholo, very creditably, Dr Skerman as Mujor-General Stanley scoring a decided hit from the momont he appeared on the stage. Mr F. M. Deighton's Pirate King was not altogether a success, though his make-up was certainly villainous enough. " Samuel " received fair justice at the hands of Mr Or. H. Barnott, and Frederic's rMo was allotted to Mr A. R, Fitzherbert. Thia gentleman has a not unpleasant voice, bub it lacks strength, ami ins " stagey " acting contributed to mar his important part. Tho Sergeant of Police rcooived a life-like impersonation in tho hands of Mr F. Bishop, whose strong and pleasant voico gavo full justice to his solos. The principal ladies' parts wore all filled with ability, Mrs Humphrey as Mabel reeoiving repeated oncores for her solos j Mrs Awdry as Edith, Misi Nicholson as Kate, and Miss Bett as Isabol, wero also very successful. Miss Boss's impersonation of Ruth was certainly tho prinoipal success of the leading characters, hpr voice and gestures being both poouliaily characteristic of what Ruth should be, though her make-up was decidedly not suggestivo of forty-seven years, as it undoubtedly 3hould have been. The young lady contributed marvellous dramatic ability, and the fire with which she rendered her solos was only slightly marred by a rather too rapid delivery. The Pirates and Polico wore well impersonated, and woro heard to advantage in the various choruses. The lively coquotishnoss of MajorQenoral Stanley's daughtors however was admirable, Miss Moßeth coming in for much praise at the hands of our Wanganui anmtours. It is needless to say that tho dresses of Pirates and ladies woro excellent, and, were it not for the cramped stage, would have' presented a vory brilliant panorama throughout.
