WELLINGTON REGATTA.
(per united fbess association.)
Wellington, March 15.
As the wind went down at sunset, and the sea also, (although the water was still lumpy), it was determined to row the four-oar outrigger race between Wellington, Canterbury, and Wanganui. A good start was affected, and Canterbury got off with the lead, which they maintained for 700 or 800 yards, "Wellington and Wanganui being side by side. As the water became rougher, Wellington drew ahead, and won easily by four lengths, from the Canterbury boat, Wanganui being about a length and a half behind Canterbury. Time, 5J mins. March 17. The rowing races postponed from Saturday are being rowed to-day. Light southerly weather, and a smooth sea. For the four inrigged only the Star Club (Wellington) and Union Club (Wanganui) competed. The latter won easily by two lengths and a half. A good start was made. When half a mile had been covered Wanganui assumed the lead, and maintained it throughout. , For the double sculls, the Union Club (Christchurch), Star Club (Wellington), and Te Aro Club (Wellington) started. The Star Club led Christchurch by two lengths until , rounding the first buoy, where bad Bteering allowed Christchurch to come up, and on rounding the second buoy they were on level terms with the Stars, the third boat being a quarter of a mile away. A good race was expected to the winning post, but when 100 yards from the post bow oar of the Star's ceased pulling, and the Christchurch men ■ rowed in easy winners. The Te Aro crew did not finish.
The reason of the Wellington men pulling up in the Double Sculls' Race was through the bow oar breaking.
