March 15.

An indignation meeting of farmers and merchants ' was held this afternoon at the Corn Exchange, to protest against the new railway tariff. About 60 persons were present, including Messra Holmes, White, Ivess, Pearson, and Wynn Williams, H.H.R's. Resolutions were passed condemning the action of the Government in raising the tariff — resolving that meetings be held throughout Canterbury for the consideration of the question — that protestation be made to the Premier, and that a suggestion be made for its postponement till the opening of Parliament — that the Canterbury members meet to consider the tariff — that a league deformed to call the meetings j a telegram, conveying the protest of the meeting, and signed by the members of the House of Representatives present, and the chairman of the meeting, was despatched to the Premier before the meeting closed. The President of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Piesident of the Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Industrial Association were also present. An apology was read from Mr McMillan, M.H.R.
