March 15.
At the R.M. Court, in the case of Peach v. Christie, claim of £50 damage for alleged trespass on land at Ellerslie, but in reality a claim against the New Zealand Rifle Association for the use of the ground at the colonial prize firing, plaintiff was nonsuited, as leave was shown by the plaintiff's evidence.
March 16.
A fire broke out in the Ponsonby Road at 7 o'clock this morning in some new twostoreyed shops, in process of erection for Mr W. G, Allen. The following were destroyed : — Allen's block of two-storeyed shops, and his stable and workshop, with one of his dwellings, Hyamsons, ironmonger ; Gifford's dwelling, partly damaged ; Allen's second dwelling, partly daniaged. The following are the insurances : — Allen's, £600, £outh British ; and £400, New Zealand ; Mr Bishop, commercial traveller (Allen's tenant) furniture, £100, Imperial ; Hyamson, stock and furniture,, £475, Royal; £100 Union; Gifford, £275, South British; Hazard, (Gifford's tenant), furniture, £100, Imperial. The origin of the fire is believed to be from a loafer sleeping in Allen's unfinished shops.
