A consignment of salmon trout ova arrived by the lonic to-day. The salmon eggs' number 24,000, and are from Sir James Maitland's fish hatchery, near Sterling. When the chamber was opened it was found that a considerable number of the ova were dead, but the remainder were in good condition.

Mr Purvis, chief engineer of the lonic, brought out 10 robbins for the Acclimatisation Society, of Wellington. There were 24 shipped from London, but the birds fought so much that only 10 arrived here alive. The lonic also brought a mail of 900 letters.

In the Gazette to-night the islands of Java and the islands of the Eastern Archipelago and Mauritius are proclaimed as infected places under the Public Health Act. John Holland Baker has been appointed Commissioner os Crown Lands, Canterbury, vtce John Marshman, who retires from the service.

Great preparations are being made for the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of St. Patrick's College on Sunday next. Bishops Moran and Luck have already arrived to assist Bishop Redwood, and a large number of Roman Catholic clergyman from different parts of the colony will be present. The nbw building will be a magnificent one, and afford acoommoclation for seven professors and one hundred and fifty students. It is designed by Mr T. Turnbull, of this city. The City Council has refused to grant any salary to the clerk of the Licensing Committees, and the Mayor stated that if the committees refused to grant midnight licenses the loss of revenue would probably compel the imposition of an additional rate.

Captain Russell, of Hawke's Bay, a few days ago, entertained at a " harvesb home " the men in his employment and their friends. Captain Russell referred to the fact that the next holidays would be for the races, and said he hoped to see the men ther^, enjoying themselves rationally, but he also hoped that they would avoid gambling in every form, and not patronise even the totalisators.
