WANGANUI HO RTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S AUTUMN SHOW.

President— Dr R. 0. Earle. Vjge-Pbesi-3>ent—H. C. Field, Esq. SeoWaby— Mr B. N. Manley. Committee — Dr Tripe, Messrs J. G. Sharpe, A. Christie, W. H. Bjrnicoat, 0. Dawson, D. Lundon, Jesse Cannons, John Goode, S. Adams, W. Alexander, J. Ruscoe, and W. J. Smith. The customary autumn show of the Wanganui Horticultural Society was held in the Drill Hall to-day. The exhibits were not as numerous as they were last year, but as compensation for this, the quality and appearance s , of both flowers and vegetables were better *' than those exhibited at the lasjb Autumn Show. The entries of Mr vV. J. Smith were ' greatly missed this show, it • will be remembered that r on former occasions • hei was a large prize- taker./ Decora-, tion in the proper' sense of the term had not been attempted, a few cabbage treep, had been placed in the centre of the hall, and at the sides some j^-een shrubs' and trees hid been 'fixed. The exhibits 'of /Mr- A. Laird occupied -the first, place on the left-I hand side of the entrance. Amongst his display were ornamental gourds "of various shapes, an ear of millet, some [dried grasses, and a bouquet of dyed and dried grasses. ,<. He had also on show a healthy specimen of . the stringy bark, fully two feet high j quick growth considering that the seed was "sown - only three months ago. Besides a varied collection of heaths, Mr Laird exhibited a number of new plants, foliage, and flowering, amongst which were caladiums, gesneria, echevia, gloxinea maculada, the latter a winter flowering plant.- A number^of.gjass seed samples were also included in the - exhibits. Mr J. Currie, of Bushy Park,' had ', a .large collection of. cut. flowers, amongst _J which were some good specimens' of i the , phlox drummondi. Mr J. Laird had a corner to himself, filled with cut flowers, shown for . •' exhibition only. The flowers were of .great r • variety, and formed a -centre of attraction. Two large tobacco plants were also shown* by Mr J. Laird. Their leaves were large and well formed, showing that the culture. '■ of this plant is possible, in Wanganui. In <• the pot grown plants some large flowering, balsams were shown, the varieties . being. good specimens. In the same class begonias, both flowering and foliage,- were well represented. Geraniums and pelargoniums were ;rather poor ; the fuschias were hardly up to the average.) A ma&jificent' gloxinia was ■ exhibited by J. Cannons.- Ferns made a good display, one exhibited by. Miss Mor- ' rison being much admired. Many -varieties ; of ferns, both native and exotic, were " shown. The dahlias formed a good show, the specimens being very creditable. The exhibits of Phlox Drummondi were very good, and in the verbenas , the .specimens . were equally creditable. . The collections of cut flowers were, large, and the varieties numerous. Several' neat floral .devices were - shown, an anchor, a cross, and crossed hoops being amongst the designs. An exhibit of • . honey shown by Mr Laird, junior, received . > commendation. la the fruit department . ; the judges very highly commended -Mr J, JProvost's exhibits of egg plums and seedling apples, both of which were very creditable. An -exhibit of jellies by Miss "Watts was highly commended by the judges, Class I — Pot Plants (Amateur) in- Bloom.. '"' Judges — James' Cannons and Alexander Findlay (Marton).— -Balsams, 3 var," H.
