STURGE'S MOTIVE POWER.
- We (British Mail) understand that a pri-. vate syndicate (as a preliminary to the.formation of a public company) has been incorporated for the purpose of acquiring the English and foreign patent rights of Mr Sturge in " the invention of an improved. means of generating or producing motive power for facilitating the propulsion of tricycles and other light carriages or constructions, and for .driving light machinery generally." Owing to the incompleteness of some of the foreign patents, particulars of the invention are withheld for the present from all but the members of the committee of the syndicate, by whose sanction, however, its objects are stated as follows :—: —
1. Propelling power is provided, and no personal exertion is required beyond gaiding the carriage. ■ ... 2. Any rate of speed, up to 15 miles an hour, i 3 attainable. 3. The length of the journey is immaterial , 4. The carriage will travel uphill as easily, and almost as quickly as on a level road. 5. The power applied is especially adapted^ for rough or heavy roadg. 6. The apparatus is most ' easily regulated ' and controlled, and the carriage can be guided with equal facility and stopped instantaneously. - . 7. The propelling power is contained in a very small compass, and is of no appreciable weight. . ■ 8. The cost of construction is exceedingly moderate, from £2 to £3 being sufficient to adapt the apparatus.
Our local brewers will have to look to their laurels if the following extract from a Westport paper be correct. Captain Medley, of Wanganui, having tasted some of our local beer, both at Nelson and Wellington, wrote to Mr Nahr, to the effect, that if he had any similar beer in stock, he could send him a cask, which he did, and the result was, that the manager of the Club at Wanganui, after sampling it, ordered a supply for the clubs use,
