THE PRAYER QUESTION.

« TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I am much surprised at the statement made by the Rev. Mr Treadwell that prayer is a " fundamental " principle of the Wanganui Benevolent Society, and could not be done away with. I was the originator of the Wanganui BeneTolent Society, and called the first meeting. Three of us were then appointed a provisional committee to draw up rules. These rules contained no reference to prayer whatever, and were adopted at a general meeting, at which meeting no allusion whatever was made concerning prayer. If Mr Treadwell means that the " fundamental " part of tho proceedings were embodied in the rules, he is therefore altogether wrong ; on the other hand, if he means the " fundamental " part was added subsequently, surely there is no reason why a resolution should not be passed, abolishing a rule which has been the means of keeping many well-wishers from being present at the meetings, and contributing their assistance to a cause which should be supported by all, irrespective of creed. — I am, &c, A. D. Willis.
