ATCEMPTED SUICIDE OF AN INSURANCE AGENT.
<*, , (per united press association.) Kumari, Dec 14. Berkley Mursell, Government Insurance Agent, cut his throat at Dihnanstowu last evening. He was in a despondent state of mind owing to the illness of a child of whom he was very fond. He was brought to the hospital, as his condition is very precarious. His wrists are also cut badly.
Earl Carnarvon, besides purchasing a quantity of land in Sydney and suburbs, is at the head of a syndicate who have acquired extensive tracts of land in Western Australia. In future no license will be issued to recruit for labor in the Pacific unless it is shown that the vessel carries no firearms or ammunition beyond what is actually for the ship's use. Owing to there being no steamers from Wellington lost night the southern mails were not brought on as usual, and were not delivered iv town to-day. At Hobarton the 27th ult Samuel Crombie Brown was committed for trial for issuing valueless cheques. Between May 11th and the date of hia arrest he passed not lea* than sixty-four similar cheques, representing in the aggregate over £600 oa confidjng tradesmen,
