+ THE MELBOURNE SPRING MEETING. (reuter's telegrams.) Melbourne, Nov 3. The first day's races of the Victorian Racing Club's Spring Meeting took place to-day at Flemington. The attendance on the course was very large. The weather was fine though sultry. The following are the results :—: — MELBOURNE STAKES, 1J miles: Commotion ... ... ... 1 First Demon 2 LeGrand 3 Commotion won very easily. Time, 2m in lljsec. MABIBYBNONO PLATE, 5 f urlonga. lolanthe King's Own 2 David „ 3 A fair start was made, lolanthe and Bargo being the first to get away. lolanthe was leading on entering the straight, with Bargo close up, but lolanthe came with a rush and increased her lead, and romped home an easy winner by several lengths. Martini-Henri 1 Sardius 2 Hurricane ... 3 Betting at post was — 5 to 4 on Archie, 5 to 2 against Off Color, 5 to 1 against Martini-Henri, 7 to 1 against Sardius, 10 to 20 to 1 against the others. The following nine horses started : — Archie, Hurricane, Little Sister, Martini-Henri, Napier, Off Color, Sardius, Signor, and Vernet. Little Sister rushed to the front at the start, and led past the stand, followed by Sardius, Off Color, Martini-Henri, Napier, Hurricane, and Vernet. Archie, who started badly, was last. At the first turn Little Sister was leading, with Martini-Henri well up, Archie being still last. The pace was now terrific. At the bridge Off Color ran to second place, and Sardius and Signor were leading Martini-Henri. The favourite was still in the rear. This order was observed along the back of the course. As they entered the straight Sardius led the field by two lengths, Martini -Henri being next, followed by Off Color. At the distance Martini-Henri shot to the front and came to the post an easy winner by two lengths from Sardius, Hurricane third, and Off Color fourth, Archie fifth under severe punishment. Time, 2min 39sec— the fastest time in the world. The favorite, .Archie, was hooted by the public as he came to the weighing paddock. corburg stakes, 1 mile and a furlong.
