COUNTY COUNCIL.

— <— <» j The regular monthly mseting of the County Council was held at the Albany Chambers last afternoon. Present— Or. Sommerville (chairman), Crs J. Mia. i, Kennedy, Poison, Heslop, Gabb, Higgie, and Walker. The minutes of the previous regular and special meetings were read and confirmed. The Foreman of Works' report was read and adopted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Higgie, That the request of the petitioners of the Manganhero for tho Council to assist in the [repair of the Makirikiri valley road be complied with. Moved by Cr Morgan, seconded by Cr Heslop, and carried, That the secretary reply to Mr Secretary Batkin re the 20 per cent payable on the sale of land in the Wanganui County, and state thai this Council are of opinion that tho 20 per cent is due to the County Council on the gross receipts, and that there can be no reduction on account of scrip having been exercised. The scrip was a provincial liability, and was taken over by the General Government. Heaolved, on the motion of (Jr Higgie, That Mr Liffiton be appointed Returning officer to the County Council. Hesolved, on -the motion of Cr Heslop, That the Foreman of Works report on Mr Sullivan's claim as early as possible. Moved by Cr Morgan, seco tided by Cr Heslop, and carried, That thia Council approve of the action taken by the Chairman in reference to his representing to the Government tho probability of the scarcity of labour that is likely to prevail at the ensuing harvest, in consequence of the numerous public works that will then be iv progress, and asking . the Government to forward to Wanganui the number of immigrants applied for as soon as possible. Resolved on the motion of Cr Handley That tho Foreman of Works be instructed to prepare specifications for re-metalling the Great North Western Road wherever necessary, to be laid before the Council, at the next ordinary meeting. Moved by Or Kennedy— That this Council giant a sum of money to assist to repair the Makirikiri Eoa d in accordance with the request of the deputation. Cr Higgie seconded. Moved by the Chairman, as an amendment, seconded by Mr Poison — That pending the settlement of a main lino of road from Wanganui to Taupo the Council cannot at present see its way to granting a sum of money to the Makirikiri line of road ia tho Wangaehu District. The amendment was put to the meeting and carried. Cra Sommervitle, Poison, Handley, and Morgan voting for, the rest against. As an amendment on this last amendment which now became tho substitute resolution it was moved by Or Heslop seconded by Cr Handley — That in the present state of the County roads and the limited funds at the disposal of this Council it would not bo justifiable for the Council, to grant the aid requested by the Wangaehu 'Highway Board. This motion was put to the meeting and lost. Moved by Mr Morgan seconded by Cr Kennedy and carried — That an honorarium be granted to the Chairman to the amount of £13 7s 6d for services rendered by him to the Wanganui County. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment : — Thos. Low, £12 103 ; David Low, £9 ; Thos. Low, £1 4s ; John O'Hanlori, 8s ; Chronicle, £6 19s ; Blyth, £5 16s 2d ;W. D. Shaw, £7 10s ; Chairman, J. R. Sommerville, £13 7s 6d ; Flannary Bros., £23 3s 6d ; Duncan and .York, £13 03 8d ; D. Ballam, £17s 6d j maintenance men, £64 Bs.
