PALMERSTON NORTH.

("from our own correspondent.)

May 20, 1878.

A general holiday has been proclaimed here to-day to celebrate the opening of the line through from Foxton to Wanganui, and I believe a number of the townspeople will avail themselves of the opportunity to visit the latter place. At the ball which concluded the concert in aid of the Sunday School on Wednesday last, tho provisions were supplied on such a liberal scale that there was n great quantity unconsumed. The committee therefore invited the school children on Friday to clear up the remainß, and great was the astonishment of the inhabitants of the Square to observe at a little after 2 o'clock aby no means quiet line of children with hungry looks march up to the Foresters' Hall. In a short time they emerged with a much more satisfied look, one boy I noticed having secured an evident prize in the shape of the beat part of a ham.

There has been some talk of a high school here, and there ia no doubt that if it were established it would prove a benefit to the district, and I believe ifc would be amply supported.

I hear that a robbery having been committed in Feilding, Constable Price proceeded to arrest the culprit, who, objecting to such a proceeding, immediately drerv a knife and endeavoured to perform therewith, on the body of the Constable but was properly checked. As an instance of the increase of the value of lauded property in the district, £ may mention that certain sections which three years since cost £50 have this week been sold at £600.

Yesterday the weather was so cold that on the water there was half-an-inch of ice.
