PALMEESTON.

Tijnewas called before the second innings was played out, so the match was decided on the score as above. A. meeting was held on Monday evening 31st inst. to take into consideration the best means of expending the amount raised for the benefit of the widow and family of the late W. Aldridge. It was resolved tbat the purchase of the section now in their occupation be completed, a sum of abcut £25 bein°- required for the same. That a patent Mangle should be procured,and that the sum of £1 per week should be given to the Widow for a term of three months, A committee was then formed for the purpose of carrying out the above objects. The English Church is not yet out of the contractor's hands, and the .seats, though in hand, are not yet placed in position ; however, it has been thought well to commence the usual church organization, at least so far as our present position warrants. A meeting was held last Tuesday, at which his Lordship the Bishop of Wellington presided, when two Churchwarden and six Vestry-men were elected. The Bishop pointed out to the meeting the difference existing in the government of the Church here and in the old country. That owing to there being no connection between. Church and State many names and forms were dispensed with, and though some for con. venience sake had been retained, yet' they did not represent the same- legal, power as at home ; yet the Church here, being self-supporting and locally governed, such offices should be looked upon as of even greater importance. We find by the report to hand of the Wesleyan Conference that we are not to have a resident minister here at present, as was hoped. This is to be regretted, as a large congregation has sprung up under the fostering the charge of Revds. Hammond and Simmonds.
