TURAKINA.

(From our own correspondent.) Feb. 2nd.

Last week the playgoing Turakinaites were entertained, by Levoi's Canine and Panoramic Troupej but as^ tho space for exhibition was'rathor confined, the audience had to be content with the canine part- of ''the performance. ■ Some disappointment was naturally felt at this. The Bridge has had another of its seasons of rest during which traffic was suspended. No doubt it will bo able now to endure the trials of life more steadily. On Friday night last there was a slight shook of earthquake here, as also on Saturday about midday. Tongariro is said to be closed now. Probably these motions of terra firma are a consequence. They sadly disturb one's notions of stability.

There is at present a good deal of sickness here, especially among the children, no doubt the scarcity of good water, or atmospheric influences have something to do with it. On Sunday last a little girl, a daughter of Mr E. Dais, died. Last week Mr McXoill, contractor, chose this lovely spot for the celebration or" his nuptials. In the Presbyterian Church the ceremoiry was performed, and so quietly were matters arranged that scarcely anyone knew of the occurrence till long afterwards. Our storekeepers are at length awakening to the necessity of keeping pace with the times in the matter of display and advertising to catch the idle gaze. One of our friends last week was endeavouring most eagerly to render his place of business showy and attractive, but I have not heard whether his efforts to please were crowned with the success which they merited. The farmers around are now busy shearing their lambs so that the showers which have just fallen will not prove so acceptable as they would, otherwise have been.
