FURTHER PARTICULARS.

A letter .was received this day by a gentleman in Wanganui, from the Superintendent of Taranaki, in which he says, It-is hoped and believed that the act was that only of a few, probably not more than four. He has reason to suppose that none of the Taranakis, or Ngatiruanuis not living amongst them, are implicated in the affair.

The Rev. Mr Whiteley was a Wesleyan 'minister, ■■; and has been amongst the Maoris there for forty years. He was respected by the natives, and it is supposed that as he was go.ing to preach, the murderers shot him to prevent his giving the alarm about, the Gascoigna family being murdered, supposing him to have known it. He had seven bullet wounds in his body; all the others were tomahawked. The consternation in" Taranaki is y.ery

great.
