MR. LUCKIE AT THE HEAD OF THE POLL. PROBABLE PEACE WITH THE NATIVES. THE MELBOURNE RACES. WARRIOR WINNER OF THE CUP. THREATENED RIOT IN NEW SOUTH WALES. SCENE IN THE ASSEMBLY. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGBAPM.) (IBOM OPE OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Nelson, Monday. The elections for the return of four members of the Provincial Council for the City of Nelson took place on Saturday. The following was the result of the polling:—Mr D. M. Luckie, 312 ; Mr Henry Adams (Provincial Solicitor), 2GI; Mr A. Greenfield (Provincial Secretary), 256 ; Mr Arthur Collins (M.H.R.), 196 ; Mr Burn, 167. Mr Burn is, therefore, not returned The Colonist Extra, published on Saturday, has the following:—The Government have received a telegram from his Excellency the Governor from Auckland via Napier to the following effect: —" I have just received a telegram from the Honorable Mr M'Lean informing me that he has arranged preliminary terms of peace with Tawhaio (The King), Rewi, and others. Particulars not given. This is great news.—G. F. Bowen." Wellington, Saturday. The folllowing telegram has been received by the Governor from Mr M'Lean : " Hamilton, Nov. 10. " Tour Excellency will be glad to hear that the preliminary terms of peace have been concluded yesterday, with Rewi and Mauiwheri, who undertake to co-operate with the Government in restoring order and tranquillity throughout the island." Mr Williamson and Mr Gillies, candidates for the Auckland Superintendency, are still addressing meetings. Both are hopeful of election. The schooner Eugene reports Capt. Blaekett, the second mate, and five of the crew of the barque Moaroa at Gilbert Island.
Wellington, Sunday. H.M.S. Challenger arrived here today, from Melbourne. She sailed from Melbourne on the sth, but did not leave Qneenscliff until the morning of the 7th. She brings the following further news of the races:— Maiden Plate: Portizan, 1. Coeur de Lion, 2. Detective, 3. Railway Stakes : The Baron, 1. Glencoe, 2. Melbourne Cup: "Warrior, 1. Monk, 2. Phoebe, 3. "Warrior got off in front of everything for the first quarter of a mile. He was there joined by Sheet Anchor, Bishopbourne, and Circassian, and for a little time he fell back. Circassian made an effort, but fell back beaten. "Warrior then came in front, and had his own way for the rest of the race, winning at bis own pace, without an effort, by a couple of lengths. Phoebe made a good third. Time—3 minutes, 4Q seconds. Hurdle Eace : Dictator, 1. Maid of the Mist, 2. Darling Stakes. "Warwick, 1. Misty Morn, 2. Stdnet, Nov. 5. Three hundred navvies on the Northern Railway struck work, and threatened a riot at Murranueze. An extra body of police had to be sent for. The Legislative Assembly sat till 3 o'clock on Thursday morning, the Opposition talking against time for the purpose of proroguing the debate on the tariff. In the course of the morning a discreditable scene occurred between the late Treasurer and the present Premier. The former characterised
the latter as a boaster and a coward. The latter retorted by threatening to pull the late Treasurer's nose. A scene of great confusion followed. The debate was resumed next day, the Opposition still endeavoring to waste time.
