TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA
FORTY-HOUR WEEK HANDICAP. FORTHCOMING CONFERENCE. (Received Thursday, 11.15 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Attorney-General, the Hon. R. G. Menzies, announced in the House of Representatives that the Minister of Customs, the Hon. T. W. White, would leave for New Zealand by tlie Awatea on Friday to discuss trade relations with the New Zealand Government. It is understood that this sudden decision to send Mr White to New Zealand has been precipitated by difficulties encountered by New Zealand manufacturers as tlie result of the introduction of the forty-hour week in several important secondary industries. The rise in production costs has increased the pressure of competition from Australian factories and the possibility of tariff action by the New Zealand Government against Australian factories had been mooted several times lately. It is to discuss these difficulties in particular that Mr White will visit Wellington. While there he will discuss also the possibilities of increasing the market for Australian citrus fruits.
