SWIMMING
RECORD LOWERED. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The New Zealand record for the 220 yards free style swim by intermediate girls was lowered by one second to 2 min, 49 3-ssec., by Miss Kathleen Grey, of the Otahuhu Club, at the Auckland intermediate junior championship carnival held in the tepid baths to-night. Miss Grey moved smoothly through the water with a relaxed easy style, and retained the title by five yards. The previous record was held by Miss Islay Purdie, of Dunedin. Miss Purdie registered 2min. 40see. as an intermediate in a race at Auckland last Easter, but chose to have the performance recognised as a senior ladies’ record. — (P.A.)
