STOCK EMBARGO
BALLOT ASKED FOR. AN OTAGO SUGGESTION. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. A decision to ask the Dominion Ex? ecutivo of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to endeavour to have a Dominion ballot conducted by the Department of Agriculture on the question of the lifting of the livestock embargo, was reached by the Otago Provincial Council. The impossibility of arriving at properly representative opinion through branch and district meetings was emphasised, and it was considered high time that the producers as a whole were given sufficient information and an opportunity to express their opinion. It was reported by tlie secretary that the proposals made by Mr Lloyd Hammond, that stock should be imported under certain precautions, had been circulated to branches, with a request that they should send in their opinions. Very few replies had been received, and those that were were definitely opposed to the lifting of the embargo.—(P.A.)
