No. work was done to night. The Awatea is scheduled to leave for Sydney on Friday. Half an hour before the tea break, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., a man working in one of the hatches of the liner, which is berthed at the Quee,n’s Wharf, left the hold for a smoke. The man was dismissed by the company and replaced by another from the Waterfront Labour Bureau. Shortly after the workers resumed, after six o’clock, the dismissed man returned to the ship and was told to go. It is stated that he refused to leave and called a meeting of the men. working on the ship ■ to discuss the matter. As the meeting which was considering whether the workers would contimie with or without the man was being held in working time the Union Company dismissed the unionists. The claim is made by the unionists that it is customary for the men to leave the hold for half an hour’s < 1 smoko” and that the dismissed man was exercising this convention. The shipping employers stated that the mat'eafcvas in hand and no trouble was_Jlspected to-morrow morning (PX)
