FARMERS’ UNION

WOMEN’S DIVISION. MASTERTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Rest Room on Wednesday, September 1. The report of the last council meeting was read, and various matters of business dealt with. Arrangements for the new housekeeping scheme were completed, when it was decided to call for applications for the position of housekeeper for the Masterton branch. The business was left in the hands of the secretary, Mrs Gawith and the advisory members, Mrs Donald and Mrs Burling. During the afternoon Mrs Morton very kindly contributed several songs, these being enjoyed by all present. The recent purchase of a piano has made possible this pleasant form of entertainment. The “wandering shilling” was won by Mrs Jensen. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Cameron and James.

CARTERTON BRANCH. The usual monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently in the P. and A. Rooms. There was a fair attendance. Mrs Standen presided. Members stood in silence as a mark of respe;. t to the relatives of the late Mr. I). Anderson and the late Mrs G. Butler, who had been an active and valued member of the branch. Much interest is being taken in the Spring Flower Show to be held this month. The results of the monthly competitions were as follow.—Needlework: Miss E. McKenzie, 1; Mrs J. Standen and Mrs L. Rayner, equal 2; best scones, Mrs E. Allen I and 2; best bloom, Mrs L. Rayner (pansy) I, Mrs J. Warrington (wallflower), 2; shrub, Mrs E. Allen 1 and 2.

An interesting talk on Switzerland was given by Mrs Fisher of South Carterton. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Fisher and to Miss Wolters and Mr. Hawker for judging the various competitions. The hostesses for the meeting were Mesdames G. Hart, A. Phillpotts and Miss Arcus.
