ROAD WORKERS STRIKE

“AN INTOLERABLE POSITION.” ULTIMATUM FROM MINISTER. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, “An intolerable position has arisen and drastic steps have been necessary,” said the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to-day,'in referring to a strike of 80 men employed by the Public Works Department on road construction work at Bruce Bay, South Westland.

Mr Semple said he had sent the men an ultimatum, ordering them to return to the job and stating that refusal meant dismissal.

Mr Semple received news .of the strike on Friday and as a result of his investigations he had satisfied himself that the men had not acted constitutionally within the terms of the Public Works Agreement and that they had no just cause for striking.—(P.A.)
