MYSTERIOUS MISHAP

TO PLANE IN AIR. LONDON, Sunday. 11 Port wheel burst. Clear the aerodrome for arrival at 3.45 p.m.,” was the sensational wireless message received at dlie Renfrew airport from Captain Elgey, flying a 10-seater passenger plane from Belfast to Glasgow with two other employees. The plane was 4000 feet up over the Irish Sea flying in dense mist when there was a violent bump and an explosion. Captain Elgey said he did not know what had happened. He just waited for the plane to fall to pieces and drop into the sea, but when he flew from the mist he looked out and saw that the greater part of the undercarriage and one wheel had disappeared. Apparently the plane had been hit by an aeroplane climbing in the haze. Captain Elgey miraculously landed the heavy plane on the remaining wheel without mishap, swinging the machine round asi it touched the ground. He alighted in a semi-con-scious condition as the result of his ordeal. What hit the plane is still a mystery. No plane is reported missing.
