“ST. JOAN”
MOVIE PRODUCTION. MR BERNARD SHAW’S COMMENT. NEW YORK, Tuesday. ' Charges of interference by the “Catholic Action,” proposed in connection with a movie production of “St. Joan,” and made by Mr Bernard Shaw in a four-column letter to the editor of the “New York Times,” are denied by the National League of Decency and the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors ’ Corporation, as well as by various heads of the Roman Catholic Church and.movie censorship bodies. The letter, which is characteristically Shavian, says: —“I have everything to fear from meddling amateur busybodies, and the ‘Catholic Action’ turns out to be a body of such conceited busy-bodies.” The letter further stresses that the play- in the past has been regarded by the Church in a friendly manner, and concludes with a vigorous attack on the censorship generally.
The organisations, in denying interference, expressed bewilderment, and insisted that they knew nothing of the matter.
