TJ.S.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS. PERRY WINS SINGLES. FOREST HILLS, Saturday. F. J. Perry won the national singles championship of the United States for the third time to-day, defeating J. D. Budge 2-6, 6-2, 8-6, 1-6, 10 : 8, in an exciting match which lasted 2hr. 50min. In the women’s final Miss Alice Marble sprang a surprise, defeating Miss Helen Jacobs, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. ST. MATTHEW’S CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. % annual report of the St. Matthew’s Tennis Club states:—Your committee has much pleasure in presenting its thirteenth annual report. The past season has been most enjoyable and Very successful. The value of asphalt courts and surroundings over grass ones was well demonstrated this season, as this club was well into its season before members of grass court clubs could make a start. The official opening took place on the courts on sth October, when a gathering of members and visitors took part in an enjoyable Yankee [tournament. The financial membership [numbered 36, which was a substantial (decrease on last year’s membership. The standard of play was well maintained, if not improved. The team was successful in again winning the Wairarapa C grade championship. Club Championships and Handicaps: rphe following were the winners in these events.—Championships: Ladies ’ singles, Miss S. Frater; men’s singles, Mr K. McEwen; ladies’ doubles, Misses G. flrcombe and S. Frater; men’s doufs, N. Watson and R. McEwen; combined doubles, Miss S. Frater and N. .Watson. Handicaps.—-Ladies ’ singles, Miss S. Frater; men’s singles, R; McEwen; ladies’ doubles, Mrs Hayne and Miss Penistone; men’s doubles, C. Carleand J. Duckett; combined doubles, Miss J. Milne and A. Green. Junior championships. —Ladies, Miss J. Gray; menSs, Mr J. Duckett. The Richard Brown Memorial Trophy for the ladder competition again created more interest in the ladder games and was won by Mr C. Carle.
During the year a volley hoard has been erected -which many members will find an added attraction to the court facilities. The annual dance and donation of trophies was again a most enjoyable social function. We wish to express our thanks to all kind helpers who have in no small way contributed to the success of the season: —St. Matthew’s Vestry for Parish Hall facilities; Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale, for services as hon. auditor; the Press for publicity; Mr Knapp for attendance to court surroundings; Mr Wm. Penistone otml any who assisted in the erection jojwte volley board, and all club memjbera and officials whose co-operation gave made the task of the executive praeh more easily.—For the Committee, g 9.
