“NATIONAL UNDERTAKING”

AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE. AUCKLAND, Monday. Affirming that the proposed Auckland harbour bridge is now necessary for the proper development of the North Shore area, a conference of interested local bodies held at the Town Hall agreed that the bridge should be built as a national undertaking, and that there should be no financial obligation on any of these bodies in connection with the cost of constructing and maintaining the bridge. It was, however, agreed that in the event of the necessity arising, those represented at the conference would have no objection to a toll being charged to users of the bridge. Having thus disposed of the financial question, the meeting appointed a delegation to ask the Government to build the bridge. —(P.A.)
