LIGHTS AND BRAKES
MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK-UP. Commencing on Ist August a Domin-ion-wide check-up of lights and brakes on all motor vehicles is to be undertaken by inspectors, at the instance of the Transport Department. Traffic Inspectors in Masterton and the Wairarapa will be co-operating. It appears that the very real improvement in brakes and lights which resulted from the inspection carried out last year is not now n°arlv so noticeable and numbers of cases of glaring headlights and faulty brakes have been reported, states the Commissioner of Transport, in a communication drawing attention to the matter. The number of deaths and accidents on the road have increased to an alarming degree and for the first four months of this year the deaths from motor accidents amounted to 68, as compared with 51 for the same period last year. For every person killed on highways, about 35 are injured. In view of these figures, the Transport Department feels fully justified in seeking the co-operation of local bodies in another check-up on the brakes and lights of all motor vehicles. Tills year the is supplying a standard sticker free of cost to all local authorities who -are. prepared to co-operate and the question of a uniform certificate to be issued by Automobile Clubs and garages has also been taken up with these organisations. The certificate is handed by the driver or owner of the vehicle to the traffic, officer and provision is made for his signature- where it meets with his approval.
