ALLEGED CALCUTTA SWEEP

UNEXPECTED POLICE RAID. TE AROIIA, .This Day. Late last night, on the eve of the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s raco meeting, .about three hundred sportsmen assembled in* the Masonic Hall in connection with the drawing of the twenty-one horses engaged in the Champion Hack Cup to-day. The proceedings, alleged to be on a Calcutta sweep style, had just commenced, the first horse realising £25, when fivt* members of the detective force and Constables Monson and Hinton made their appearance in the room. They closed the doors, and took charge of the money on the table, about £ll4. They then took the names of the whole of the participants present, including a number of visiting sportsmen, with a view to future proceedings. The gathering had been arranged by a few local residents, but it was not under the auspices of the Jockey Club. The unexpected raid has caused much excitement locally.—(P.A.)
